Beyond the initial shock - Supporting the farming community affected by the Naxxar explosion

Following this morning's explosion at the Ta’ Lourdes fireworks factory in Magħtab, MaYA Foundation would like to thank everyone who reached out, offered assistance, and showed genuine concern towards the farmers, breeders, and animals affected by this incident.

In the first hours after the explosion, much of the focus was understandably on the fact that no human lives were lost. This was indeed something to be grateful for. However, through direct contact with farmers and breeders in the area, it quickly became clear that the impact was much wider.

Animals lost their lives. Others were injured or severely distressed. Farms suffered extensive structural damage. Agricultural land was impacted. The consequences of such an event do not end when the smoke disappears... affected farmers and breeders will continue facing challenges in the days, weeks, and months ahead.

We are grateful that this reality was promptly acknowledged by several media outlets, helping bring forward stories that are often left untold. Behind every farm there are families, years of dedication, daily responsibilities, and animals which depend entirely on human care.

The reaction from the public has also shown something important: our community understands that these losses matter. The messages of concern, offers of help, and willingness to support affected farmers and breeders have been truly encouraging.

MaYA Foundation is also grateful to those within the agricultural sector and related industries who have already reached out offering practical assistance. This solidarity reflects the importance of standing together when members of our farming community face difficult moments.

We encourage any farmer or breeder affected by this incident who requires support to reach out. While the full extent of the damage is still being understood, including possible longer-term effects on animal welfare and the surrounding environment, no one should feel that they have to face these challenges alone. Farmers and breeders requiring assistance with affected animals are also encouraged to contact the Animal Welfare Directorate, whose teams have been assisting on site following the incident.

MaYA Foundation will continue following the situation and remains committed to ensuring that the voices of farmers, breeders, and rural communities are heard - especially when they risk being overlooked.
